We form up a tribe/team/group on a private server that sits within my home firewall, invitation only. I play survival games with my family and one or two of my closest friends. maybe they'll decide like me that the entire point of a survival game is ultimately building up a permanent base. Sadly, I don't know of any current or imminent game that will really deliver what I want. It's a step in the right direction though. These were just locations with set pieces that I could move around. State of Decay 2 was a pretty fun game that had multiple bases that you could build up, but just like AC: Valhalla, these were not /my bases/. well, kinda sucked overall.Īn upcoming game I have hope for is State of Decay 3. I want to actually build my base.įallout 76 seemed like it could have really hit my sweet spot, but the game just. It's the game's base with some set pieces that I can shift in and out. I'm encouraged that in AC: Valhalla, they've incorporated a base that you grow over time and it is your hub. Basically, all items I get should just immediately get turned into components of some kind that I use to craft both my weapons, gear, but also, a base and a community. E.g, in Cyberpunk, I hate dealing with looting 100+ items every time I play, just to either scrap them or sell them. While I really like games like Cyberpunk and Assassin's Creed, I'm really wanting a AAA game of that caliber to really embrace the base building and crafting we see in survival games. ![]() I've also tried games like The Forest, and couldn't get into them either-because the point of the game is not ultimately about building an awesome base/community. But I played a fair amount when the game launched (maybe for a month or so), and it was so boring back then, that I'm having a hard time dedicating the time it takes to learn everything you can do in it now. You get to build a cool base, you get easy access to still explore and have your base (something Conan absolutely fails to facilitate), and it has elements of combat and danger. I may actually try to get back into No Man's Sky, as it apparently has turned into what is likely a great game for me. I tried playing Ark, and I think if I was a kid, I'd prefer it over Conan, but as an adult, I prefer Conan. It has it's own beauty, to be sure, but it does't match with me. I've tried Valhiem, but I just cannot get over the mine-craft-level graphics. So far, the best survival game I've found is Conan Exiles. Even a game like Dyson Sphere kind of seems to scratch the itch I have for survival games (even though there's no danger in it at all). I wonder, what even is a "survival" game to people? To me, it's crafting and base building in a dangerous world. The point of survival games for me is building up an awesome base in a dangerous world. It's far less about discovery, or combat or even dealing with "survival" elements like thirst and hunger. Then I realized what the entire point of survival games for me is. You're basically building little bases up as you go and moving around. ![]() It's describing a new survival game called Icarus, which sounds very promising, but at the end they describe how the game doesn't want you to build up a permanent base. Maybe it's the pandemic changing my thinking on things, but right now, I really like playing games where I go around collecting resources and building things from them. My favorite genre of game right now are survival games.
